I. The Metaphysical Reading

How the stone has been held.

Blue onyx is worked with as a stone of composure and considered response. Practitioners keep it on the desk during long negotiations, and it is often paired with hematite when the task calls for calm words held on a very steady ground.

II. The Scientific Reading

What the lattice actually does.

Blue onyx is a parallel-banded blue variety of chalcedony, closely related to agate but distinguished by its straight rather than concentric layering. Most commercial material is quarried in western Turkey and in the Argentine provinces of San Luis and Salta, where it forms in cavities of Tertiary volcanic rocks. Some stones sold under this name are dyed grey chalcedony; natural material shows subtle variation between bands.
