Blue Smithsonite has the chemical formula ZnCO₃, crystallises in the trigonal (botryoidal habit) system and measures 4 – 4.5 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Blue smithsonite is zinc carbonate whose colour comes from trace copper substituting into the trigonal lattice. The classic sky-blue botryoidal material was mined from the Kelly Mine in Magdalena, New Mexico, worked from the 1860s until the deposit was effectively exhausted in the 1930s, making original Kelly specimens highly collectible. Modern production comes from the Tsumeb district of Namibia and from Lavrion in Greece.
