Cryolite has the chemical formula Na₃AlF₆, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 2.5 – 3 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Cryolite is a rare sodium aluminium fluoride whose name means 'ice stone' — its refractive index is so close to that of water that fragments become nearly invisible when submerged. The great Ivittuut deposit in Greenland supplied the flux used in the industrial Hall–Héroult process for smelting aluminium until it was exhausted in 1987; the mineral is now sourced synthetically for that purpose, and natural specimens are collector's items.
