Q: What is Kunzite made of?

Kunzite has the chemical formula LiAlSi₂O₆, crystallises in the monoclinic system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Kunzite is the pink to lilac gem variety of spodumene, coloured by trace manganese, and was named in 1902 for George Frederick Kunz, the American gemmologist who first described it. It is strongly pleochroic — the colour looks strongest down the length of the crystal — and has perfect cleavage, which makes it difficult to facet but rewarding when cut correctly. Colour can fade under prolonged sunlight, so gem material is stored away from strong UV.
