Moss Agate has the chemical formula SiO₂ with hornblende / chlorite / Fe-Mn oxide inclusions, crystallises in the trigonal (microcrystalline) system and measures 6.5 – 7 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Moss agate is a translucent chalcedony in which inclusions of iron- and magnesium-rich minerals — chiefly chlorite and hornblende, sometimes iron and manganese oxides — form dendritic, moss-like patterns. It is not a true banded agate but is grouped with the agate family by tradition.
