Purple Scapolite has the chemical formula (Na,Ca)₄[Al₃Si₉O₂₄](Cl,CO₃), crystallises in the tetragonal system and measures 5.5 – 6 (Mohs) on the Mohs scale. Scapolite is not one mineral but a solid-solution series running between sodium-rich marialite and calcium-rich meionite, forming in metamorphosed limestones and in altered volcanic rocks. Violet material is strongly pleochroic, showing noticeably different colours down different crystal directions, and often displays a faint chatoyancy from fine parallel inclusions. Its colour can be unstable under prolonged strong light or heat, and its moderate hardness with distinct cleavage makes it a stone for pendants rather than everyday rings.
